Banking and Investment

Banking services and Investment activities spur economic growth, facilitate corporate transactions, and provide lifelines to consumers, students, homeowners, pensioners. Their prominence has only grown through globalisation and free trade as goods, services, people, and capital relocate according to market principles. On the contrary, there are also signs of trouble: the sub-prime mortgage crisis and Lehman Brothers' insolvency, the American bailout of automotive giants and financial heavyweights, worldwide job losses and dampened trade.

The Banking and Investment programme is aimed at future professionals who can absorb the market dynamics, act with prudence, and behave ethically without exception. Via the Banking and Investment programme, students will learn economic theory, try quantitative techniques, and explore possibilities in dealing with currencies, commodities, securities, and equities. The programme targets proactive attitude, technical competence, and receptiveness to changing market conditions such as the newly imposed regulatory constraints regarding the financial services industry.

The programme comprises 5 modules. Each module entails one 3-hour session(day or evening) a week for 12 weeks. 3 months(or 36 hours in attendance) marking the completion of each module.

After finishing the 5 modules, students can opt to take part in a 3-month internship to boost confidence and increase familiarity with working situations.

Teaching is done by lively seminars and focused tutorials. Students use textbooks, articles, and case studies simulating real-life decision making. Regular independent study of an appropriate duration is recommended to reinforce classroom learning.

Assessment will involve group work, presentations, essays, and a final exam. Upon completion, students will be awarded an ESE Certificate in Banking and Investment. Modules may be studied in isolation.
